National Alliance Congratulates New Mexico Recipient of Milken Education Award

This week, Colin DeGroot, a science teacher at ASK Academy charter school in Rio Rancho New Mexico, was honored with the Milken Educator Award. This prestigious award, known as the “Oscars of Teaching,” is an annual recognition given to outstanding educators and includes a $25,000 individual prize.

LA School Board Renews Alliance College-Ready Public Schools Charters

Great news out of Los Angeles, where the LA Unified School District (LAUSD) recently renewed the charters of six Alliance College-Ready Public Schools serving more than 2,600 students. The renewals cap a successful grassroots effort by Alliance families and staff, who wrote more than 3,500 letters to the LAUSD board and made a strong in-person showing at the board meeting to demonstrate their support for Alliance schools.

Milken Family Foundation Honors Outstanding Educators

It’s Oscar season! (Sort of.) The Milken Family Foundation is traveling the country delivering its 2015 Milken Educator Awards—often referred to as “the Oscars of teaching”—to up to 40 unsuspecting teachers, principals, and other learning specialists. The awards have been given out since 1987, and they recognize early- to mid-career educators who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and the promise of continued excellence in the future. Each award, which is a surprise to the recipient, comes with a $25,000 check and inclusion in the Milken Educators Network.
